Comfrey Tea is a fermented liquid fertilizer that can be easily made at home and used to provide nutrients required by your plants to grow and thrive. Comfrey plants are very easy to grow, they produce large quantities of biomass, can grow in depleted soils and will regrow quickly after harvesting. Comfery Tea contains potassium, phosphorus, calcium, trace minerals and compounds that help regulate vegetative growth and stimulate flower and fruit production.
1) Gather Comfrey leaves.
2) Fill a bucket about 1/2 full with the leaves.
- Chopping or bruising leaves will quicken decomposition. I often toss them on the ground, and spend a few minuets walking over the leaves before raking them up and depositing in my bucket.
3) Fill bucket to 3/4 full with water.
- Place bucket in a warm area and protect from direct sunlight
4) Stir bucket once or twice a day.
- Stirring vigorously for a minuet or so will oxygenate the water and promote an
effective aerobic decomposition. Over time, as the plant material breaks down, the mixture will become easier to stir. An air stone and air pump from a fish tank is very effective for maintaining aerobic conditions in your Comfrey Tea and reduces the amount of stirring required.
5) Strain the tea or draw liquid off the top, avoiding sediments. Dilute tea with 4 parts
water and irrigate your plants as you normally would.
- After 2 or 3 weeks of fermentation (perhaps longer when the weather is cool), the leaves will be mostly disintegrated. What once was Comfrey is now liquefied and available for direct absorption by the roots of plants.
